Scissors The main tool for hair stylists, these can be expensive and are often their pride and joy. There are different types of scissors for different tecniques.

Sebaceous Glands Microscopic glands in the skin and scalp which secrete an oily/waxy substance called sebum which lubricates the skin and hair.

Sebum The natural oil that comes out of your pores. It can cause oily akin and hair.

Semi is short for semi permanent hair colour, a clour which lasts only about 6 washes. Not many clients use them, most prefer a demi (see demi).

Serum is a hair styling product used to control hair and add shine.It is made from silicone.

Session stylist A hairstylist who is often out of the salon doing creating pictures for magazines- the “rock stars” of hairdressing. We have quite a few at Stevie English Hair, they are super talented and creative people.

Setting A technique where the wet hair is rolled over (see rollers)and dried to create curly styles or hair with movement.

Shampoo A haircare product used for the removal of oils, dirt, skin particles dandruff, environmental polluutants and other contaminant particles that gradually build up in the hair. The main purpose is to remove unwanted build up without stripping hair, making it clean and more manageble.

Shave The process of removing hair close to the skin. We don’t offer the old fashioned face shave at Stevie English Hair, but we do like doing undercuts or adding “shaved” sections for certain clients.

Shoot is a term to describe a photographic shoot where a session Stylist of the salon is creating the new salon images.

Sodium Laureth Sulphate Is a NO NO. Sodium laurel sulphate is a foaming agent that’s terrible for hair, we DON’T use products that contain it at Stevie English Hair.

Straighten A process of smoothing frizzy or big hair (see) blowdry. You can also straighten using ceramic irons.

Structured is a term often used for haircuts. A great stylist’s haircut will have stucture like a architects building.

Style Guru is a styling product from O&M – it hydrates and creates movement.

Stylist refers to a hairdresser who specialises in cutting, although most of the staff at Stevie English Hair are great at everything.
